VooDoo Barbecue Sauce

A dark, mysterious barbecue sauce with smoky, spicy, and slightly sweet notes inspired by New Orleans flavor traditions. Perfect for ribs, chicken, and pulled pork.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 0.5 cup molasses
  • 0.25 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon blackened seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 0.5 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 2 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Steps

  1. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in all dry spices: smoked paprika, blackened seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and cumin. Toast the spices for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until fragrant.
  3. Add ketchup, molasses, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, honey, and liquid smoke to the saucepan. Whisk until completely combined and smooth.
  4. Add hot sauce and stir well to incorporate.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and flavors meld.
  6. Taste and adjust seasonings as desired. Add more cayenne for extra heat or molasses for more sweetness.
  7. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature before using or storing. The sauce will thicken slightly as it cools.
