A dark, mysterious barbecue sauce with smoky, spicy, and slightly sweet notes inspired by New Orleans flavor traditions. Perfect for ribs, chicken, and pulled pork.
Ingredients
- 1 cup ketchup
- 0.5 cup molasses
- 0.25 cup apple cider vinegar
- 3 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1 tablespoon blackened seasoning
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 0.5 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 0.5 teaspoon hot sauce
- 2 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon butter
Steps
- Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in all dry spices: smoked paprika, blackened seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and cumin. Toast the spices for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until fragrant.
- Add ketchup, molasses, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, honey, and liquid smoke to the saucepan. Whisk until completely combined and smooth.
- Add hot sauce and stir well to incorporate.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and flavors meld.
- Taste and adjust seasonings as desired. Add more cayenne for extra heat or molasses for more sweetness.
- Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature before using or storing. The sauce will thicken slightly as it cools.
